I saw a post on LinkedIn that had a lot of interaction around this very topic.

Do I think people jump on the bandwagon of a trend just to promote themselves? Of course. Any trend is going to pull along some people looking to cash in on something that is popular.

Do I think we should do away with all the mindfulness apps and meditation videos etc., and just teach people to learn to be mindful without all the technology? No, I don’t.

Do I think people use too much technology? Eh…maybe yes…maybe no. But just because something is abused or inauthentic in some circles or misunderstood in others doesn’t mean that it’s time to throw out the baby with the bathwater.

Technology is here to stay and so is mindfulness. More and more people are noticing the benefits from slowing down and being more conscious of their actions. How can that possibly be a bad thing? Meanwhile our culture and our lives are speeding up so that sometimes it’s difficult to remember to stop for meditation, or to take a deep breath and detach before you jump into a pit of drama.

Meditation apps can help you block out the noise around you and listen to some soft music that would help you spend a few minutes resting your busy mind and over stressed body. There are many of them. New smart watches can be programed to remind you to slow down and breathe. That’s not a bad thing. Sometimes when your mind is overactive, a guided meditation can help you focus when your brain is in a tizzy and you’re finding it difficult to draw within.

Yes, it’s possible to get overly dependent on technology so when the power goes out, you don’t know what to do. But the answer for that is to stay mindful. Use the apps when you need them, pull the plug when you don’t. It’s not rocket science, but it IS vital to your wellbeing to find a way to connect, and draw your strength and wisdom from your true identity. Learn to nurture awareness and detach when you have to.
